Storing Your Apples
Storing your apples properly before pressing can make a real difference to the quality of your juice. We can't recreate the storage used by large commercial growers, but these simple steps will help keep your apples in great condition before pressing.
Start with Good Apples
Before you store them, sort through your apples and remove any that are bruised, rotten or mouldy. One bad apple can quickly affect the rest.
Keep Them Cool
A cool barn, shed or garage is ideal. Keep the apples somewhere dry, out of direct sunlight and with plenty of fresh air.
If you don't have an indoor space, you can store them outside, but don't leave them sitting directly on the ground. Use pallets, wooden boards or another raised surface to keep them off the soil.
Store Them Carefully
If you're storing a large number of apples, spread them out on clean straw or stack them in shallow piles. Avoid piling them too deep, as the weight can bruise the fruit underneath.
Check them regularly and remove any apples that start to go soft or show signs of rot or mould.
A little time spent sorting and storing your apples properly will help us make the best possible juice from your apples.
